AI Recruitment: The Skills UK Employers Are Looking for in 2026

In this article: AI recruitment now stretches well beyond roles with AI Engineer in the title. Strong software engineering foundations still matter more than most employers expect. Defining the actual outcome you need leads to a much better search. Article by Sam Payne.

Artificial intelligence has moved from an emerging technology conversation to a genuine workforce consideration for UK businesses. But the impact on recruitment is more nuanced than simply seeing more vacancies with AI Engineer in the title, the bigger shift is that AI capability is becoming relevant across Software Engineering, Data, Product and Technology Leadership.

Is the AI talent market only about Machine Learning Engineers?

Roles such as Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist or AI Researcher remain important, but many businesses are not developing foundation models themselves, they are looking at how existing AI technologies can solve real business problems. That creates demand for people who can implement AI, not simply research it.

Why does traditional software engineering still matter so much?

AI products still need excellent traditional engineering. Models need APIs, applications need interfaces, data needs storing and processing, systems need deploying, monitoring and securing. A strong software engineer with experience building AI enabled products can sometimes be more valuable than someone hired solely around theoretical AI expertise.

Data skills are still fundamental

AI is only as useful as the systems and information surrounding it, which makes Data Engineers, Data Architects and other data specialists an important part of many organisations' AI strategies. Hiring an AI specialist before solving the underlying data problems can put the cart before the horse.

Are AI tools changing software development itself?

AI assisted development tools are becoming increasingly common, so the question for employers is moving from do you use AI towards how do you use it effectively. Strong engineers still need to understand architecture, testing and security, AI can accelerate development, but experienced judgement remains critical when deciding whether generated code is actually suitable for production.

What should employers actually be hiring for?

Before searching for an AI expert, ask what you are actually trying to achieve. Do you need someone developing machine learning models, an engineer integrating LLMs into an existing product, a data specialist preparing the underlying infrastructure, or a technology leader who can set an AI strategy? These are very different hires. At ACR Technology, we recruit across AI, Data, Software Engineering and Technology Leadership, helping organisations identify the technical skills they genuinely need rather than simply following the latest job title trend. Our AI Jobs article, [link to Insight 8], looks at this from the candidate side too.
