Permanent vs Contract in IT Recruitment: Which Is Right for Your Business?
In this article: Permanent hiring suits capability you need for the long term, contracting suits a specific problem. Day rate and salary are not directly comparable once true costs are considered. The strongest technology teams often use a blended model of both.
When a technology team needs additional capability, one of the first decisions is whether to hire permanently or bring in a contractor. There is not a universal answer, the right option depends on the problem you are trying to solve, how quickly you need someone and whether the requirement is likely to exist long term.
When is permanent hiring best?
When you are building capability the organisation will need for the foreseeable future, growing a core Software Engineering team, appointing a Head of Technology or bringing Data Engineering expertise permanently into the business. Permanent employees develop deep knowledge of your products, systems and customers over time.
When is a contractor a better option?
When the business does not need another permanent employee, it needs a specific problem solved: a major cloud migration, a new ERP or CRM implementation, a product launch, an unexpected skills gap, or covering while a permanent hire serves notice. An experienced contractor can provide specialist capability quickly without creating a permanent headcount requirement.
Why can't you compare day rate directly with salary?
Contractors naturally appear more expensive when a day rate is compared directly with a permanent salary, but employers also need to factor in National Insurance, pension contributions, benefits, annual leave and recruitment costs. A contractor may cost more over an equivalent period, but if you only need the skill for six months, permanent recruitment may still be the more expensive solution overall. Engaging any contractor working through their own limited company also means considering the off payroll working rules. View our salary guide for more information.
Planning for when a contractor leaves
This is the main risk to plan for. If someone spends nine months building a critical platform and takes that knowledge with them, the business can create another problem for itself. Good contract hiring should include knowledge transfer from the beginning, with documentation and handovers built into the project rather than treated as an afterthought.
Can technology teams have both?
Some of the strongest technology teams use a blended model, permanent employees providing continuity and long term ownership, contractors providing specialist expertise and additional capacity when required. Instead of deciding you need a permanent Software Engineer or a contractor, start by defining the business problem, what needs to be achieved, how quickly, and whether the knowledge needs to remain internally.
